Leanne Halls - CV

Except for Leanne Halls, Beaudesert in Queensland and Carlton River in Tassie, don’t have a lot in common.  Leanne was born in the former and moved, via Brisbane, Sydney and Japan, to the latter in 2011.
She loved painting and drawing as a child and has been painting formally now for over five years.  She says: “My style is evolving, and I enjoy the process that accompanies the changes.  My restlessness around my style, and indeed my subject matter, has probably been influenced by the numerous moves we made when I was younger; my father was in the Army.”

Her entry into the field of art came from the need to recoup from burnout induced by working hard full-time while studying whatever was available after hours.  Some balance and harmony were re-introduced by attending a Community College course in Art in Sydney, where, to save costs, she painted in watercolours rather than oils.  She moved to Gosford where she attended a class in chalk pastels, and then in 2011 graduated (also with a drawing Prize) from the Julian Ashton Art School, where the training was “intense, significant, solid and enhancing.” 

However her need to move around, (both in residential locations and in art) has manifested across a broad field of 2D expression: from still life, through land and seascape, to portraiture.  Even within each genre, there is evidence of exploration.  What does remain constant, though, is Leanne’s ability to infuse her works with light, delight and obvious expertise: this artist is nothing if not highly skilled.
Now creating works in a range of mediums, it is perhaps her time in Japan, where she studied suiboku and hakuboku with a Master, that has assisted in forming her new expressive path.
When asked further about her current directions, Leanne said “I am tossing around a few new ideas, I like to paint things I have experienced directly, and I love Japanese art.  The simplicity of it, the spaces created within a work, and not least, its luminosity.  My question now is: Can I do that in oil paints?”
Leanne has exhibited at the Colville Gallery, Salamanca.
