Painter of portraits, miniatures, watercolours, china also woodcarver. Born Vera Lindsay Whitesides
at Oatlands, where her father was manager of the Commercial Bank of Tasmania. Lost her hearing at
the age of 7, and with other family and freiends was educated by a series of governesses, of whom a
Miss Glover may have encouraged her in painting and drawing. The family moved to Hobart in 1896.
Studied under Benjamin Sheppard and Lucien Dechaineux at the Hobart Technical College 1909-19. Received commissions to paint miniatures including two governors sire Francis Newdegate and Sir William Allardyce. Ceased painting in 1931 possibly due to failing eyesight.
