Rodney's early years were spent sailing the east coast of Australia on a yacht with his parents and sister, a nomadic lifestyle that nurtured his creativity and sense of adventure. After eventually settling in the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales, he completed high school and went on to earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts at Newcastle University, supporting himself by busking as a classical guitarist.

Rodney's paintings explore the physics of light transmission, reflection and refraction. Using layers of translucent oil glazes, he mimics the way light penetrates delicate materials, scattering and bending as it interacts with different densities and textures. His work aims to recreate the optical effects of light passing through gossamer fabrics and flora, offering a meditation on the nature of perception.

His work has been exhibited in solo and group shows and he was an artist-in-residence at Hobart Airport between 2017 and 2020. Rodney's paintings are held in many private collections across Australia.
