The prize will be awarded ‘to the best painting to demonstrate light in the landscape’.
The Colville Lloyd Rees Art Prize of $20,000 (acquisitive)
Named in honour of the life and works of Lloyd Rees (1895-1988)
People’s Choice Award (non-acquisitive)
Max Angus Watercolour Award (non-acquisitive)
All prizes will be awarded on the advice of the judge, with the exception of the People’s Choice Award.

1. Key Dates
Painting/Artwork plus Entry Form (3 copies) to be delivered between May 27 to June 4th 2019, within business hours 10am to 5pm.
Finalists announced 20th June.
Collection of works not selected 20th - 27th June.
Official Opening and Winner Announced 5th July, 2019.
Exhibition of Winner and Finalists 5th – 18th July, 2019.
People’s Choice Award announced 17th July.
Collection of work not sold on conclusion of exhibition 19th – 24th July.
Open to any Australian or international artist.
The entered work must be new and completed in the 12 months prior to 1st June.
In any year, a competitor may enter one work only.
3. The Work
The term “landscape” is to be understood broadly and can be inclusive of land, sea or cityscapes.
The term “painting” is to be understood broadly and is inclusive of any two-dimensional work. May be a landscape painting in oil, acrylic, watercolour or mixed media
Must NOT exceed the size limit of 1.22m x 1.22m (not including frame)
May be a multi-panel work as long as the overall dimensions do not exceed the size limit above.
All works shortlisted for exhibition shall be exhibited and shall be for sale, the price as indicated on the entry form and will remain fixed for the duration of the exhibition.
4. Preparation of Work for Delivery
Must be suitably framed for handling. A stretched canvas is considered a suitable frame. Flat D-Rings with wire between placed at the back of the work 10cm down from the top of the frame are preferred.
Must be clearly marked on the back with the artists name, address, phone, title of the work, and selling price.
Must NOT be wet when submitted.
The Artwork must be accompanied by:
A completed, signed entry form x 3 copies included with the artwork.
A non-refundable administration fee of AUD $55 per entry, payable by cheque or credit card (see entry form)
Painting/Artwork plus entry form (3 copies) to be delivered between May 27th and June 4th.
Entries must be delivered to the gallery during specified dates, see Key Dates, to Colville Gallery 91 A Salamanca Place, Hobart, Tasmania, 7000.
Late or incomplete entries will not be accepted.
Delivery must be made in person, by a nominated representative or by a courier company.
The Gallery will NOT pay for any costs incurred in the delivery of an entry, including freight.
If consigning works via post or carrier, return of work to be booked by the artist. The Gallery will NOT pay any costs incurred in the return of an entry, including freight.
The Gallery will exercise all reasonable care in handling works submitted however, neither the Director nor the Gallery will be responsible for any loss or damage whatsoever, and however caused, to any work while in the Gallery’s custody.
Each artist is and shall be responsible for maintaining their own insurance cover, against loss, damage and transit.
7. Licensing the Work
The artist warrants that the work is original and does not infringe copyright, moral or other rights of any third party. The artist grants to the Gallery a non-exclusive licence to reproduce the work in material form, to photograph, publish and or communicate it to the public for prize related purposes, and anything incidental to such purposes, by the Gallery and sponsors, including marketing, publicity, the prize and its exhibition in all media, including but not limited to electronic/digital, broadcasting and print media, in perpetuity.
8. Selection of Work
The finalists for the Colville Lloyd Rees Art Prize and the winner of the prize will be determined by an independent judge as appointed by The Gallery.
The judges’ decision is final and no correspondence shall be entered into.
The Colville Gallery, its Director or staff are excluded from any opinion or decision in the selection of finalists or the winner.
Finalist and prize winners will be announced to the media and published on the Gallery website.
Artists whose work has not been selected as a finalist will be notified to collect work from the gallery or book nominated courier.
The winning artists agree to make themselves available for the purpose and publicity at times and dates and in places as reasonably requested by the gallery.
Artists are cordially invited to join the director at Colville Gallery for the award night on 5th July, 2019.
The 2019 Colville Lloyd Rees Art Prize exhibition will be held in the Colville Art Gallery, from 5 – 18th July inclusive. Admission is free. Open 7 Days: 10am–5pm.
The winning artwork will be acquired by Colville Gallery and further presented to an Australian permanent public collection.
11. Commission and Payment
The Colville Gallery Art Prize will deduct 44% commission (inclusive gst) from the selling price and payment of the balance will be paid to the artist and representing gallery, where nominated, at the conclusion of the exhibition or on completion of sale.
Artists affiliated with a specific commercial gallery should confirm their Gallery regarding ‘split commission’ arrangements. Split commission is 44%.(22/22) The name of the Gallery must be included on the entry form if commission is to be split.
12. Return of Works
At the conclusion of the exhibition, See Key Dates, all works not sold can be collected from the gallery on the last exhibition day, or until 28th July, or will be returned to the artist by nominated courier.
Where arrangements have not been made for collection or return freight by the due date, Colville Gallery reserves the right to sell or otherwise dispose of the work on the expiration of thirty (30) days from the last exhibition date (18th July, 2019).
12. Interpretation of the Rules
In the event of a dispute regarding the interpretation of conditions, the decision of Colville Gallery shall be binding on all parties.
