Travel is about experience and memory making, and one of the fundamental quirks is we have no control over the moments which resonate for us. It might be that an object reminds us of a person, or a vibrant sensual experience triggers a cascade of moments.
This fine series of etchings explores Kate Piekutowski’s experience as a traveller who flits between her new Australian home and the old European world of her ancestry. Piekutowski mixes beautiful images: dreamlike cities in one etching and delicate Australian bush flowers in another. The works are subtle and clean, focusing on one central detail, realised through well-defined line work and carefully placed red colouring.
Her picture making has much in common with a delightful postcard one receives randomly, or a moment drenched in poetry from cinema. Like the chaotic, non-linear collage of human memory and experience, this work mixes the human body’s voluptuous lines with objects and architecture, resulting in art that is a symbolic impression of one person’s exploration of who they are and where they have come from.
