B England 1904 arr Aust 1921 Stoner studied at the Hobart Technical College under Dechaineux, later teaching at same, 1936-64, alongside Carington Smith. She engaged on further study George Bell School 1939, London and Paris 1949-50, and East Sydney Tech under John Passmore Godfrey Miller.
“In Paris, the gods of Picasso and Matisse were very evident and her work is best understood against this background as it incorporates elements of fauvism and cubism
In the late 1960’s her work developed from form to imagination, this large poetic landscape (Spring Snows After the Fires c1972) confirms her poetic impulses, this the most lyrical response by a local artist to the aftermath of Tasmania’s tragic 1967 bushfires, and the precursor to the verdant landscapes of the late 1970’s.
Her most successful work issues from a risky but instinctive struggle in which natural appearances are transformed into intense structures of shape, colour and form which aim to create a heightened sense of reality.”
